Wedding in Newcastle with Andy & Helen

Wedding photos in Newcastle with Andy and Helen

Taking someones wedding photos is pretty special, Travelling to Newcastle is also pretty special. Once in a while we meet people in our lives that turn our to be special. A few years ago I met my friend Andy Scott and I know from very early on that he was an incredible person. An Army medic. Wedding photographer and a crazy Referee takes this man all around the world.  Sue and I are blessed to call him our friend.

The wedding in Newcastle

Last October Sue and I joined Andy and his then finance Helen for their wedding in Newcastle for wedding photos. Wow what a wedding it was.  I was absolutely over the moon when Andy and Helen asked us to photograph their wedding. Especially bearing in mind it was 350 miles away.

Our journey

Sue and I headed off after breakfast on Sunday and had a pretty pleasant trip. Until we arrived in Newcastle and a phone call from Andy’s brother Garren who told me that Andy had been rushed to hospital with suspected kidney stones. 🙁

Needless to say, the next few hours were a little tense. So we did what all good mates would do and went to the pub. 🙂 Thankfully later that evening I had a call to say Andy had seen a Dr and was given meds to see him through the weekend.

Phew.

So, after a fab night, we both woke full of excitement. Sue and I were off to meet Helen and the girls at home. It was an absolutely wonderful couple of hours getting to know Helen, the girls, and her lovely parents. lots of details and special moments.

We left for the church which was less than a mile away and was met by an awesome vicar who said to me “do whatever the couple want” music to my ears. Andy arrived looking better than I had expected, actually, he looked spiffing in his Army Uniform. Did I mention he is a Major?. Soon after Helen arrived in a beautiful vintage car and we had time for some photos with Dad and the girls. This really was shaping up to be the relaxed wedding we were promised.

The ceremony.

The ceremony was just perfect, short compared to some but very much about “the wedding” and I really enjoyed being part of it. I could see Sue up in the balcony and I knew straight away she was getting teary. It was just beautiful. Afterwards, we spilled out into the churchyard which was pretty much right outside.

A small area for photos so after a brief “hugs and kisses” time we set up the confetti then cracked on with the family groups. Again it was one of those “you know best Jules” so we cracked on with a few important groups and had some fun.

The officers mess

After the formals, the guests headed off to the Officers Mess for the drinks reception and the 4 of us headed to the millennium bridge for a few photos. It was packed with people but somehow this worked very well. We even had a hen party want to join us and another married couple steal our beautiful car for photos haha. Then off to the officers mess to meet the guests.

Once there the fun started. We walked into a beautifully decorated room which was full of Union Jack flags and bunting and very much a WWll feel about it. Newspaper clippings and ration books. Almost straight away the food was served but we managed our table shots first. Then a big surprise the food, This came in big boxes. 2 for each table,

WOW what a fab idea it was like a picnic that we had to build ourselves. Everybody loved it and it was such an amazing way to get people talking. BEST wedding food idea ever!  There was bread, pies, cheese, ham, crackers and pickles plus much much more.

Deserts

For afters there were scones, cream, and jam plus tea and coffee. Honestly, I cant remember the last time I ate or laughed so much it was simply perfect.

After the food the party started and Sue and I stayed an hour or so beyond the first dance to capture the magic. But at about 9:45 we were actually knackered and headed back to our hotel room to sleep.

This really was an amazing wedding, Great wedding photos. It was promised as a “non-weddingy wedding”.  Andy and Helen pulled it off perfectly. For us, it was unusual as in we never had the 90 minutes of photos we normally do. Because Andy himself is a great photographer he knew exactly what was important about a wedding day and that’s is 1 thing. People should enjoy it. People enjoyed it!

Us included, it was an honour and a complete privilege to watch our friends tie the knot in a way that suited them perfectly and of course to take beautiful wedding photos.
